The department boasts its key subject of fine chemical honored by China Petrochemical and Industrial Group and the excellent echelon structure of subjects appraised by the Jiangsu Provincial Educational Commission. In 2000, the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Fine Petrochemical Engineering was founded. This key lab is an excellent research center in Jiangsu Province, which is supported by a team of highly qualified research fellows. The founding of this lab provides a good opportunity for further development of the department.

There are five major areas in the department, which are as follows: Chemical Engineering & Technology; Applied Chemistry; Pharmaceutical Engineering; Biochemical Engineering; and Light- Chemical Engineering. The department consists of seven teaching and research groups and an analysis-testing center. The research foundation of the department has assets of over twelve million RMB. The department has advanced instruments, such as NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, FT-IR, ICP and material testing machine, amongst others.

There are 112 faculty and staff members in the department. The faculty members consist of eighty-seven full-time teachers with fourteen of them holding senior professional titles whilst forty-three hold sub-senior professional titles.

The department has been awarded nearly forty national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. Three of these projects are supported by the National Natural and Science Fund of China; over twenty are supported by Jiangsu province and China Petrochemical Industrial Group supports six. There are still about 100 collaborated programs under research now. The department has published three monographs and one hundred and twenty papers. Among these published papers, eleven of them were extracted by SCI, six were extracted by EI and one was extracted by ISTP.
